The injector isn’t necessary. But having a tool that can help you get the mixture into the molds without making a mess will come in handy. If you choose to skip the injector even a small spoon or a pourable liquid measuring cup will work.

Why Blueberries

Yes, blueberries are a safe treat for your dog! With only 84 calories per cup of fruit, they are also a safe treat for diabetic dogs (but always check with your vet first).

Blueberries contain high amounts of vitamin C, vitamin, A, fiber, and phytochemicals (naturally occurring chemical compounds found in plants). These are all great components for dog health. Phytochemicals, for example, are linked to several aspects of health, including the ability to fight cancer in humans.

Why Coconut Oil

Coconut oil consists of at least 90% saturated fats, most of which are Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs), a form of saturated fatty acid with scientifically proven health benefits, ranging from maintaining a healthy weight to improving brain function. The components of MCTs include lauric acid, which is antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-viral; capric acid and caprylic acid, which are known for their anti-fungal effects; and other acids that are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids.

From easing upset stomaches, calming irritated skin to preventing infection and reducing allergic reactions, coconut oil has so many benefits for our furry friends!

It has even been shown to aid in thyroid balance—which in turn can help overweight dogs lose weight, and help dogs feel more energetic. Studies have shown that coconut oil can improve nutrient absorption, help counteract digestive disorders, like inflammatory bowel syndrome and colitis, and reduce overall inflammation throughout the body.

How to Make Blueberry & Coconut Oil Gummy Dog Treats

Making these treats is simple! Start by pureeing your blueberries in a blender or food processor. It doesn’t matter what setting because blueberries are so soft. Instead, just blend until you’ve reached a puree texture.

Next, melt your coconut oil in the microwave. You could also use a stove top. This should take 30 seconds or less – not much time at all. You don’t need your coconut oil to be hot. You just need the texture to go from solid to liquid so you can thoroughly blend it with the blueberries.

Add the coconut oil to the blueberries. If your coconut oil immediately seizes, add the entire mixture to the microwave for just a few seconds to bring it back to liquid and thoroughly blend the blueberries and coconut oil.

Next add the gelatin and blend it in, until just smooth. Get your mold ready. And to make your mold even easier to work with, place it on a cookie sheet to keep it from wobbling when you move it to the fridge.

Now here’s the tough part. Your Blueberry & Coconut Oil Gummy Dog Treat mixture will be ready to add to the molds if your blueberries are nice and juicy. If you struggle to pour the mixture or inject the mixture, try adding just a tiny amount of water. You want your mixture to have a touch of movement.

Fill the molds and place the treats in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight. Pop the treats out of the mold and serve anytime! As with any fruit or veggie, portion control is important. Treats should only comprise 10% of your dog’s diet and be considered an occasional treat. Store your extra treats in the fridge in an air tight container.
